Non-uniform day fundraiser

December 2012

Cowbridge Comprehensive School staff and pupils took part in a non-uniform day and paid a pound each to help finance a South African charity.

Goedgedacht Trust - poverty in rural South Africa is still widespread
The school is a longstanding supporter of the Goedgedacht Trust in South Africa. In total the school has raised £2,291 from various fundraising events which will go towards helping to build Safe Houses for orphans and vulnerable children on farms.

Poverty in rural South Africa is still widespread and children born into poor families often suffer from many disadvantages such as poor health, poor diet, sub-standard housing, alcohol and drug abuse, inadequate parenting, lack of cognitive stimulation and domestic violence. There is a great deal of alcohol-induced violence on farms especially over weekends. Children get in the way and are being harmed in the process. The Path out of Poverty project’s dream is to set up 10 safe houses on 10 farms where children are very vulnerable. They have managed to keep children safe and fed on eight farms and still need to renovate two safe houses on two farms to reach their target of 10. Path out of Poverty works on 32 farms in total. The renovation costs for one safe house is R35 000 and the annual running cost of the safe house project is R45 000.
